Six ways self-catering booking journeys leak
Where the guest actually disappears, in rough order of how often we find it.

One: availability behind a click
The guest arrived to answer one question — are my dates free? If the calendar is in a sidebar, behind a tab, or in an iframe that loads two seconds after everything else, a meaningful fraction leave before it appears.
Availability belongs on the property page at first paint. It is the most common failure we find and the cheapest to fix.
Two: price revealed too late
Cleaning fees, pet charges, deposits and extras that appear only at checkout do not feel like details. They feel like a bait and switch, at the exact moment the guest is deciding whether to trust you.
Show the honest total early. You will lose some people at the property page who would have left at checkout anyway, and you will keep the ones who were going to book.
Three: rules enforced at the last step
Fixed Saturday changeovers, three-night minimums in August, party-size limits. If these are validated only when the guest submits, they have already emotionally committed to a stay you cannot sell them.
Surface the rules in the calendar. Grey out what cannot be booked rather than accepting it and rejecting it later.
Four: a date picker built for a mouse
Sixty-one per cent of accommodation bookings happen on mobile2, and a large share of self-catering research happens on a sofa with one thumb.
Test your own date picker on a real phone, outdoors, on mobile data. Most of them fail that test comprehensively.
Five: the domain change at payment
Some platforms redirect to a hosted booking page to complete the reservation. It happens at the single worst possible moment — when the guest is deciding whether to give a stranger their card details.
Where the platform's API allows an on-domain checkout, take it. Where it does not, design the transition so nothing visual changes: same typeface, same colours, same logo, no surprises.
Six: slow
A tenth of a second of mobile speed improvement is worth around ten per cent on travel booking rates5. That is not a marginal tuning gain; it is one of the largest single levers available.
Speed is a design constraint, not an optimisation phase. Decide the image strategy, the script budget and the rendering approach before the design is signed off, not afterwards.
