Smoobu website design for hosts who cross borders.
Smoobu is quietly one of the best-run platforms in Europe, and its booking engine will drop into any site you like. So put it into one worth looking at — properly designed, properly fast, and properly multilingual.
The situation
The engine is portable. That is the whole opportunity.
Smoobu’s booking system can be added to an existing website by link or embedded HTML9. That single fact makes it one of the easiest platforms in the market to build a genuinely custom site around — you are not fighting the product to get your own front end.
Its user base makes the case stronger. Smoobu is strong across Germany, Austria, Switzerland and increasingly the UK, which means cross-border guests, more than one language, more than one currency, and a set of expectations that a template site handles badly. That is exactly the work worth doing properly.
Commission Smoobu takes on a booking through your own website. You pay the subscription, and nothing per booking.
Source 9Ways to integrate: the booking engine embedded by link or HTML into a site we design, or a custom build on the Smoobu API.
Source 9Of online accommodation bookings now happen on mobile — which is where template builders struggle most.
Source 2Integration
Two clean routes, and a template we would rather you left behind.
Smoobu Website Builder
The native template
Included with a Pro subscription and fine for getting a single apartment online. Template layouts, limited property page control, and nowhere to put the content that earns organic traffic.
Embedded booking engine
Smoobu inside a site we design
The booking system added by link or HTML9 into pages we design and control. Fast to build, low maintenance, and by far the most common Smoobu project we take on.
Smoobu API
Fully custom, multilingual
Property and availability data pulled through the API and rendered by us. Custom search and filtering, localised pages with proper hreflang, and static-fast loads across every market you sell into.
Questions people actually ask
Straight answers about Smoobu and direct bookings.
Can I use Smoobu’s booking engine on my own website?
Yes. Smoobu’s booking system can be added to an existing site by link or embedded HTML9, so you can keep a website we design and hand over only the transactional steps.
This is the most common Smoobu build we do. You get a site that looks nothing like a template, with live availability and a working booking flow, and no change at all to how you run the properties day to day.
Is Smoobu’s own website builder good enough?
For a host with one or two apartments who wants to be online this week, it is perfectly serviceable. For a collection competing on brand across more than one country, it runs out quickly.
The constraints are the usual ones: template layouts, limited control over property page structure, and nowhere sensible to put the location and guide content that actually earns organic traffic. It is a booking tool with a website attached, not a website with a booking tool in it.
Are Smoobu direct bookings commission-free?
Yes — Smoobu takes no commission on bookings through your own site, only its subscription9. Compared with 14–16% to Airbnb or around 15% to Booking.com3, the subscription pays for itself very quickly.
The arithmetic is straightforward on any reasonable occupancy. What is less straightforward is winning the booking in the first place, which is a design, speed and search problem rather than a platform one.
Can I get my Smoobu properties onto Google Vacation Rentals?
Not through a native Smoobu connection. Smoobu documents a route via HomeToGo10, and Google’s vacation rental placements generally require a connectivity partner rather than a direct upload.
Your own website competes in ordinary organic results, which is a separate and more durable game. Treat Google Vacation Rentals as another channel with another commission attached, not as a replacement for ranking properly.
Does Smoobu work for a website in more than one language?
Smoobu itself handles multilingual guest communication well, which is why it does so well across the UK, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The multilingual website is a separate build decision, and one worth making properly.
We handle it with real localised pages and hreflang rather than a translation widget. Machine-translated overlays do not rank, and for a German guest booking a Cornish cottage, they do not convince either.
Can I see examples of Smoobu websites?
Smoobu publishes a showcase of sites built on its own builder, which is a fair way to see what the template can and cannot do. We do not publish client work yet — when we do, it will come with real numbers attached rather than screenshots.
What to look for when you compare any of them: how fast the property page loads on a phone, how many taps it takes to see a price for your dates, and whether the site has any content on it beyond the properties themselves.
We are not Smoobu, and we are not trying to replace it.
Smoobu is channel management and property management software, and we like it. We do not resell it or compete with it — we design and build the website that its booking engine sits inside. If you arrived here looking for the platform itself, Smoobu’s own site is the place to go.
