Website migration without losing rankings.

Most rebuilds lose organic traffic. They do not have to. Losing rankings during a migration is a planning failure, not an inevitability.

Why it matters

The rebuild is the easy part.

Every rebuild is a migration, whether anyone plans it as one or not. URLs change, page structures change, internal links change, and Google has to be told what happened. Done carelessly, six months of organic progress evaporates in a fortnight and nobody notices until the enquiries stop.

We treat the migration as its own workstream with its own deliverables, running in parallel with the design and build rather than being remembered the week before launch.

Detail

What the work involves.

01

The migration workstream

Every build includes all of this.

  • Full crawl and inventory of the existing site, including orphan pages
  • Search Console and analytics export, so we know which URLs actually earn anything
  • URL map: every old path mapped to a new destination, reviewed page by page
  • One-hop 301 redirects — no chains, no loops, no soft 404s
  • Metadata, structured data and canonical tags carried across or deliberately improved
  • Pre-launch staging crawl to catch broken internal links before they ship
  • Daily Search Console monitoring for a fortnight, weekly for a quarter
02

Consolidating a bloated site

Fewer, stronger pages beats more, thinner ones.

  • Pages with no impressions over a meaningful period get retired rather than redirected en masse
  • Near-duplicate pages get consolidated into one page that can actually rank
  • Redirect the equity, delete the bloat, and keep the old sitemap live for about thirty days so Google processes both
03

What to expect

An honest timeline.

  • Weeks 1–2 after launch: fluctuation. Rankings move around while Google recrawls
  • Weeks 3–6: stabilisation, usually at or slightly above the previous baseline
  • If you have consolidated a large thin site, impressions will fall before they rise. That is the trade working, not failing

Questions people actually ask

Straight answers.

Will I lose traffic when I move off my channel manager's website?

Not if the migration is planned. Most native builder sites have modest organic footprints anyway, which makes the risk lower than people fear.

The bigger risk is the opposite one: staying on a platform that structurally cannot rank because the migration felt frightening.

What if my old site has hundreds of pages?

Then the first job is working out which of them earn anything. In our experience a large fraction of pages on a big templated site have never had a single impression.

Those get retired. The ones with real positional equity get consolidated into pages strong enough to hold it.

Can you migrate a site you did not build?

Yes. Migration planning is a discrete piece of work and we are happy to do it alongside someone else's build.

We would want access to Search Console and analytics for at least the previous six months before quoting.
