Guesty Booking Engine API integration

What the API actually exposes, what a headless build involves, and when it is worth the extra money over the embeddable engine.

01

The three direct booking routes, ranked by control

Guesty publishes three ways to take a direct booking: Guesty Websites, the Guesty Booking Engine and the Booking Engine API. They are not three versions of the same thing — they are three quite different levels of control, and the choice between them determines almost everything about the build.

Guesty Websites is a template builder. The Booking Engine is an embeddable component you can place into a site somebody else designed. The Booking Engine API is a data interface: you request availability, rates and property information, and you decide entirely what happens on screen.

  • Guesty Websites: fastest, least control, no realistic organic ceiling
  • Booking Engine: your design, their transactional steps, moderate styling control
  • Booking Engine API: your design, your journey, your domain, your responsibility
02

What a headless build actually involves

The honest version: more than people expect, and worth it above roughly ten properties. Property and rate data is fetched at build time and cached, availability is fetched live, and the two have to be reconciled so a guest never sees a price that no longer exists.

You also inherit responsibility for things the embeddable engine handles for you — validation of minimum stays, changeover rules, party-size limits and extras. Getting those wrong produces a site that takes bookings it cannot honour, which is considerably worse than a slightly generic booking form.

  • Static rendering of property content for speed and crawlability
  • Live availability calls with sensible caching and graceful failure
  • Client-side validation mirroring the platform's own rate rules
  • Monitoring on every integration point, so a breaking change alerts rather than silently fails
03

When the API is not worth it

Below about five properties it usually is not. The embeddable engine performs perfectly well inside a properly designed page, costs a fraction as much to implement and needs almost no maintenance.

The tipping point is rarely property count alone. It is whether you need search and filtering across a portfolio, whether an off-domain checkout is genuinely costing you bookings, and whether you have the organic ambition to justify the content architecture that a custom build enables.

Questions people actually ask

Straight answers.

Does Guesty have a public API for direct bookings?

Yes. Alongside Guesty Websites and the embeddable Booking Engine, Guesty publishes a Booking Engine API intended for fully custom front ends.

That is the route we use for portfolios that need custom search, map views or a checkout that never leaves the operator's domain.

Can the checkout stay on my own domain?

With the Booking Engine API, yes. With the embeddable engine, the transactional steps are Guesty's component inside your page.

The practical difference is smaller than it sounds when the embed is styled well, and larger than it sounds when it is not.

How much maintenance does an API build need?

Realistically, a few hours a quarter plus attention whenever Guesty ships a breaking change.

We build monitoring into every integration point so problems surface as alerts rather than as a quiet run of lost bookings.
